Lake James Environmental Association
Our Current Initiatives and Objectives

  • Acquire additional land to expand the Lake James State Park.
  • Acquire and protect land for a bald eagle habitat at Lake James.
  • Acquire land to extend the southern edge of the Pisgah National Forest down to the north shore of Lake James.
  • Inject a positive environmental influence into the negotiations between the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and the Duke Power Company in the 5-year revisions of the Catawba-Wateree Project Shoreline Management Plan. Exert an equally positive influence on the negotiations to extend the Catawba-Wateree power generation license scheduled for 2008.
  • Inject environmentally responsible restraints on residential growth along the Lake James shoreline.
  • Support and positively influence the Burke and McDowell County commissioners efforts to upgrade the Lake James watershed and use the lake as a source of clean drinking water for both counties.
  • Enhance and augment lake water quality testing conducted by government agencies by organizing, sponsoring, and managing a citizen-based Lake James Volunteer Water Information Network.
  • Establish and update a comprehensive water quality baseline for Lake James and its tributary streams. Detect and respond to any future degradation of that baseline.
  • Increase public awareness of the health hazards associated with cyanobacteria and establish an algal bloom alert monitoring network for Lake James.
